Grieth is a small town situated on the Rhine. Just across the German – Dutch border, in the region Emmerich, Cleves, Rees and Kalkar. Life in Grieth has always been closely linked to the location on the Rhine. Thus, in the 13th century built by the Dukes of Cleves built Grieth into an independent market town with its own harbor. So theu would be independent from Rees that at that time was under the rule of Cologne. Grieth pulled the revenues from all activities that had to do with the location on the Rhine (fisheries, tolls, trade, port , horses office barges , ferry etc). Major source of income today is tourism. For example, familypark Kalkar Wonderland is located just a few kilometers from Grieth.
